The 554-acre park is located about 18 miles southeast of Altoona on the eastern shore of beautiful Raystown Lake. Although it is one of PA’s smallest state parks, it is considered by some to be one of the most scenic and geologically interesting. Hiking Through Trough Creek State Park
This is also one of the greatest places to visit if you enjoy hiking. Trough Creek State Park has 12 miles of picturesque hiking trails that wind up and down a gorge caused by cuts through Terrace Mountain. The trail system consists mainly of moderate treks, varying in length from 0.12 miles to 2.4 miles. Along all of these trails you will find native wildflowers, trees and animals.
The Brumbaugh Trail is considered to be difficult, but offers one of the best views of Raystown Lake from atop a high mountain ridge.
Another trail we would recommend Balanced Rock Trail, which is the most popular and shortest trail in Trough Creek State Park. Balanced Rock Trail crosses Great Trough Creek on a suspension bridge, passes Rainbow Falls and concludes at the curious Balanced Rock formation.
The Ledges Trail (at just under a mile) offers several panoramic views of the gorge, and even takes hikers past an old schoolhouse.
If you are interested in seasonal hunting, fishing for trout, bass sucker and panfish is allowed as well as hunting for deer, turkey, squirrel and grouse.
